Petition To Dan Guerrero Will Be Sent Next Monday
The petition to Dump Karl Dorrell will be sent to Dan Guerrero next Monday, January 8. We will send it with the many signatures we have. We are closing in on 1,000 so let’s make one last push to get it signed by every Bruin we can. It’s important to send the message regardless of what the chances are of Dorrell being fired. Dan Guerrero needs to know that a large number of Bruin faithful believe strongly that our football program is in the wrong hands. It’s significant that nearly 1,000 students, alums, boosters, donors, and fans have signed their names to this effort.
Next year, after 5 long years, DG will have to measure the progress of this program under Karl Dorrell given the goals he set out when he hired KD. If KD does not win the Pac-10 championship with the nearly the entire starting team returning and the easier schedule we have next year, he never will. And if Dorrell doesn’t win the conference championship next year, ‘08 will be a disaster as nearly every starter will be leaving and the schedule gets harder.
Sending the petition will let Dan know now that we are going to hold him to his word. The letter is the first step in what will be a long ‘07 - the final year we believe that Karl Dorrell will coach UCLA Football. Karl Dorrell would be extremely stupid to coach a single game in ‘08 … because he will be fired for certain then and his coaching career will be shot. If KD does not won the Pac-10 title in ‘07 he certainly won’t in ‘08 and that would make 6 long years without a Pac-10 title. Dan Guerrero will have no choice then but to fire him. Sending the petition to Dan Guerrero now lets Dan know that we are watching.

I’m all for what you’re doing, but don’t you think you lose a little bit of credibility by sending a petition that was created, and mostly signed, prior to the USC game? It seems that you give them an easy reason to discount it completely. And it shouldn’t be hard to get another 1000 signatures. Why not make it clean, and avoid the obvious counter?

Bobby, the petition does take into consideration the USC win. If we start all over again it will take a little while. This petition has run its course and it’s time to send it to Dan. We will have other petitions and letters to send.

Perhaps an easy way to take care of that is to include in the cover letter “despite the USC win, we still feel the same way blah, blah.”

I don’t know that the issue is Coach Dorrell. It’s much deeper than that, it’s Dan Guerrero himself. Why Dan would hire a second-tier coach and pay him second-tier money and expect a first-tier recruit to come play for UCLA is an example of his poor judgment. We saw that Dan tried to do this by hiring Steve Lavin and what the results were. We also saw that hiring a former National Coach of the Year in Ben Howland produced not only better coaching, but better recruits. Better in terms of talent and character. I’m not sure why Dan believes that having a second-tier football program is acceptable in a city that does not have a pro football program, in a city of 8 million people and hundreds of thousands of alumni, but we deserve much more. It’s time to Dump Guerrero if he doesn’t secure UCLA a first-tier football coach.

Ted. Couple of things. Dan Guerrero did not hire Steve Lavin, he was already here when DG came on board. DG did fire Steve Lavin and hire Ben Howland. As far as hiring Dorrell, there is a dispute as to how much control DG had over the process. Now that DG is in firm control anything that happens here are out for he gets full credit/blame for. We are willing to give him a little leeway, but he is pushing it now. KD has not met DG’s expectations in 4 years (winning Pac-10, playing in BCS bowl, beating SC only once). He should be fired. If he goes 5 years without meeting expectations and DG does nothing, we will put the pressure on DG.
