Postgame Florida State: Dorrell Loses Momentum And Frontrunner Status For NFL Job
We have been chasing some rumors today about Karl Dorrell … have no backup sources so we will not report until we do. That has taken up some of our time.
We have found ourselves dumbfounded by what to say. Hard to believe yes. Karl Dorrell let us here at DD down! That’s kind of funny. Here we were gearing up for a potential big-time run next year, only if Karl hired the right OC, and now we have to wonder if that’s even possible at this point. Karl Dorrell has lost all the momentum and buzz from December 2 and he has no opportunity to get it back for 8 months. He basically has lost for himself a frontrunner position for a coaching job in the NFL after next season. And that hurts UCLA Football as well.
You might remember our post on the possibilities for next year. In short, we noted that with Walker committing to one more year that Karl could go out and get a big-time one-and-done offensive coordinator to replace the invisible Jim Svoboda for an easy glory ride to the BCS title game with this team and easy schedule next year. It would be a great sales pitch to make - ride the one-year bus to fame and fortune at the next level. After next year, KD would get his NFL job, Walker would get his HC job, and the OC would get whatever he was looking for. And we would get a new head coach. Everyone would be happy … except the NFL team that hired KD.
Now KD has blown it. What hot-shot OC is going to want to come now? The potential is not so clear, not so obvious. If the team falters again like yesterday, against easily beatable opponents, the whole benefit to coming to UCLA as a hired gun OC disappears - it will be replaced by scapegoating. This OC position is a much harder sell now than it was yesterday morning. So much for our championship run.
Skepticism will also now replace any potential Karl Dorrell may have with NFL owners. 7-6?! How can any owner buy into that? Next year owners will be watching with less intent. That hurts, it really does. Now Karl may not get that call up and we may be stuck with him for what is shaping up to be a horrible ‘08. With this senior heavy team next year and the schedule we have, Karl Dorrell will still win 8 or 9 games during the regular season. Any coach can. KD may have a shot at winning a bowl game too because we will get an easy Northwestern type opponent, being the 3rd or 4th place team in our conference (thank our incompetent conference commish Tom Hansen for that). But his star has lost its shine. Shame. More later …
