It’s A Lock Folks: Walker Will Be Gone After Next Year

Well you can book it now. DC DeWayne Walker will not be on the Bruins sideline in ‘08. Brian Dohn of the LA Daily News confirms what we have long suspected, Walker signed a 1-year deal to remain as DC for the Bruins. The good news of this report is that he will be with us next year. Not surprising obviously with nearly his entire starting team back, with most of them being seniors, and an easier schedule. He is practically guaranteed to outperform even this year’s turn around. His stock is almost guaranteed to go up.

The bad news is that it confirms what we have long been saying that he will commit to only 1 more year. After next year he loses nearly all his starting players, why would he come back in’08?? He will parlay the notoriety he will get after next year to make his public wish come true, to be a head coach. And with Walker gone in 08 what do you think KD is going to do?? Do you think he is going to come back for ‘08 completely depleted of starters and his star DC?? Do you think he is going to risk losing the shine he will have on his own reputation after next year and lose out on jumping to the NFL?? Walker’s contract signing confirms for us that KD will also be bolting for his long held dream of coaching in the NFL. It’s almost a lock folks. Something bad will have to happen for this scenario not to play out.

What this 1 year contract also does is make the offensive coordinator hiring more interesting. What great OC will want a 1 year job? Who knows, maybe there is one out there. Maybe there is someone ready to make a big jump and needs that one defining championship run to make the big jump happen. It’s possible, it’s possible. KD should work on that angle … if he succeeds in finding that OC his chances of winning the Pac-10 go up dramatically, as do his chances of coaching in the NFL in ‘08. This is getting interesting folks.

if you look around at other schools….they only sign their assitant coaches to 1 year deals also. It’s a smart move. If KD doesnt perform within the next couple of years and DG is forced to fire him, Walker will be at the disposable of the new coach. If Walker was signed to a 4 or 5 year deal…and Karl was fired, the new coach might want his own DC and fire Walker also. Then UCLA will be left with a huge buyout for the DC. It’s actually really smart. According to Walker, he loves being in CA. He was born and raised in Arcadia and his and his wife’s family live in Arcadia. So does walker. So its a common and smart move
