The Education Of Karl Dorrell

Much of the talk in the aftermath of the epic win over Southern Cal with regard to Karl Dorrell has been on the subject of Karl Dorrell growing into his job.  It's a new twist in the debate on his performance.  Only now, after his first big win, are reporters willing to state on the record their doubts about his abilities prior to the game.  J.A. Adande is a prime example, stating earlier this week that he thought after the Notre Dame fiasco that Karl Dorrell "didn't have the makeup of a champion." Then he says, "but maybe we have to wait a bit longer for the picture to develop." That is the crux of the new argument from the Dorrell supporters. The "yeah we thought he wasn't any good but now that he won this game we need to give him time" argument. Well, no, that's not what you have been saying all along. You have always thought he needed more time. Admitting now that you had doubts all along when publicly you were pushing the "be patient" argument is a bit of a joke. Only one beat writer, Bob Keisser of the LB Press Telegram, questioned Karl Dorrell's record publicly prior to the game. And on the radio the only ones calling for Dorrell to be fired prior to SC were crow connoisseurs Mason & Ireland, who are now singing the new Dorrell supporter tune. In the end, supporters will come to the same conclusion and will re-tune their argument as needed, give Karl Dorrell time. He is "growing" as Simers and Roggin put it.  At a million a year, we can use a little of that growing too. Next year Karl will take the team to a 9-3, 8-4 record (with 20 returning seniors, 14 of them starters) with no Pac-10 championship and no BCS bowl game and a loss to SC, and you know the arguments we will be hearing then … "how can you fire a coach that just went 9-3?!"  Give him more time, he is learning.
