Update On Mariucci Job Contact: Reporter On AM 710
Scott Wolf, the Southern Cal beat reporter for The Daily News, was on AM 710 with Mason & Ireland just before 5 pm explaining the bombshell news he disclosed on his blog that UCLA was talking to Steve Mariucci about Dorrell’s job PRIOR to the SC game. Scott came on suprised by the brouhaha he set off, and certainly by how ticked off the boys at Morgan Center are making themselves out to be.
The important question about his source came up right away. Who was his source? It was one person “extremely well connected” with UCLA’s football program who has “never been wrong” about anything he has ever told him. Wolf said he “was very comfortable” with this story and that he “expected there to be denials.” He was suprised by the reaction on the internet about the story and some of the reaction from Morgan Center, but even with that, he “stands by his story.” He also added that his source knew “the Mariucci side of the story.” So, if there were others contacted, the source did not know.
Mason and Ireland wanted to confirm that UCLA’s discussion with Mariucci was “contingent” upon UCLA losing to SC and that since UCLA beat SC the discussion is no longer going on. Wolf confirmed this.
So, one souce “extremely well connected.” Ok, not rock solid but we believe it a bit more. And again, it makes perfect sense and we expected that to be going on. Well done Dan!!
Other notes from the interview
- Fallout at SC after loss: Wolf said that there are calls for Kiffin to go but that Carroll has been given carte blanche due to his success and so if he wanted Kiffin to stay he could have him stay and that would be that. We think that Kiffin has had only 2 years and he needs time to grow. Please don’t be impatient. We have given Karl Dorrell 4 years, and because we have been patient he has this one great victory. Kiffin should be given 4 years at least, and if we follow Dorrell apologists he should get at least 6 years.
- More Fallout at SC after loss: The question came to Wolf about Booty losing his job to Sanchez. Wolf said most likely no because they like what they have with Booty and can work with him. Sanchez is an unknown commodity. Who cares?!
- Carroll to Arizona: Unfortunately, Wolf thinks there is nothing to the rumors. He think the NFL knows about Carroll and are wise to his coaching “capabilities.” He is doing well in the college level so Wolf think he wouldn’t go.
