Medlock All-America

As expected, Justin Medlock has been named to his first All-America team, the America Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America.  Congratulations to Justin, a truly great kicker! He should do well in the pros.  Congratulations also go out to coach Dorrell, the kicker’s coach, and OC Jim Svoboda (anyone remember him?!) for giving Justin so many opportunities to shine.  If you are a top high school kicker you need to sign up with coach Dorrell or Svoboda wherever they coach.

Expect this to be the first of many awards for Medlock, the nation’s best kicker, all well deserved despite the circumstances.   Some other interesting notes on the AFCA All America Team.  It has been around for 57 years.  163 Pac-10 players have received the honor, good for 4th among the Div 1 conferences (behind the Big 12 with 233, Big 10 with 231, and the SEC with 213).  This year the Pac-10 has 4 players named, tied with the SEC for second behind the Big 10 who has 6 players named.  The other Pac-10 players are RB Marshawn Lynch and DB Damien Hughes of Cal and TE Zack Miller of ASU.  No Southern Cal players were named to the team this year.
