DD Editor On Live With Joe McDonnell AM 570

For those of you who may not have heard last night’s The Joe McDonnell Experience on local radio station AM 570, a DD editor was on live with Joe for about 4 minutes.  It was a random thing, not set up.  He called the show because Joe had mentioned to callers to check out the site … and that Karl Dorrell needs to have a minimum 9-3 record next year or he’s out.  We appreciate the love, but our editor called to challenge the latter assumption.

Joe came on the phone during a break and he talked about the KD situation.  He has said many times, and we have noted on DD, that he does not think KD will be fired no matter what happens, although he did say later that he doesn’t know which way DG is leaning and that if we get blown out against Southern Cal he can’t rule out that DG may pull the trigger.

To our editor’s surprise, Joe then put him on the air live and had a lengthy conversation about this very subject and the site.  Being on the radio is no big deal obviously, but we have one single goal with this site and any way we can increase the awareness of that goal is good for us and all Bruin fans.

The gist of the conversation was that Joe liked what we are doing here at DD and that fans should have this channel to voice their opinions, just like his show.  But more importantly, Big Joe thinks KD’s overall record will come into play next year even if he goes 8-4, which he thinks should get him fired.  We challenged him on that point, that it’s not possible to fire an 8-4 coach at UCLA, it’s politically impossible.  And that if overall record counts, then it’s much worse this year than if he goes 8-4 next year during the regular season.  Plus it’s much easier to fire a 6-6, 6-7 coach than an 8-4, 9-4 coach.

Big Joe also thinks 5 years is what coaches should get because that gives them a complete program of their guys.  Our editor disagreed.  If in 4 years their isn’t substantial progress, then a coach should be fired. At 6-6 with his 4th year seniors and a ton of his upper classman starting, KD has no excuses.

Anyhow, that was the gist of the conversation.  Thanks to Big Joe and if anyone else heard the impromptu ‘interview’ give us your thoughts.
