Arizona State’s Koetter Fired: Went 7-5 This Season

Editors Note: Sign the petition, and get your DumpDorrell tshirts for the Southern Cal game. If Dan Guerrero does not get rid of Karl Dorrell this year more than likely he won't be able to until the end of the 2009 season! So get the word out!

Arizona State will fire football coach Dirk Koetter tomorrow, according to reports, after beating Arizona yesterday and taking the team to a 7-5 season and their third bowl game during his 6 year tenure. Actually, DK and ASU beat hated interstate Arizona 4 times during his 6 years there. By comparison, Karl Dorrell, hasn't beaten Southern Cal at all. We compared the two coaches and their records prior to our game, which we appropriately called the Monster.com bowl, at Sun Devil Stadium a couple of weeks ago. They were in very similar situations. At that time we thought that whomever lost that game would lose their job. ASU lost and it appears that DK has indeed lost his job.

We also mentioned that 2 more years with KD would look an awful lot like DK's 6 year stint at ASU - meaning mediocre, only for a longer more excrutiating time. The only real difference between the two is that at least DK could beat his rival. Many coaches have been let go already this season or are about to be let go, and many have similar or better records than KD.

Dan Guerrero should keep in mind what kind of impact these firings have on his own reputation. If we continue to go with a wide receiver's coach who cannot build this program to meet any of the goals he set, DG risks looking like a weak AD, particularly when so many of our other sports programs are competing at the highest level. And if DG does nothing this year when the program has vastly underperformed, it will be much harder to get rid of KD in the future.
