Dump Dorrell

Gameday Oregon State: Expect A Win & Praise From Local Press

Before we get to the game, we'd like to point out that the growing effort to get rid of Karl Dorrell continues to get more coverage in the media outside Los Angeles. Paul Buker in The Oregonian:

Bruins coach Karl Dorrell, who took over part of the offense last week when the Bruins lost 38-24 at California, has been under increasing fire …. The DumpDorrell.com Web site is getting hits.

Why aren't the LA Times, the LA Daily News or any local paper other than the OC Register giving KD the kind of scrutiny an $850,000 salaried public official (+$550,00 in incentives) should get? The media outside of LA at least recognizes there is a significant and growing movement to Dump Karl Dorrell among students, alums, faculty, and fans of UCLA.

Today the Bruins will win and they story line will be this: Karl Dorrell has the Bruins moving in the right direction. After a game we should win easily every year at the Rose Bowl, KD will get praise for beating another average team at home. It burns us up, and it burns every loyal Bruin fan up. Nowhere will they mention the entirety of his abysmal record.

Case in point, last week's loss to Cal. The story wasn't about KD's now 0-10 record on the road against teams with a winning record, or about how UCLA got their offense going … when the game was already over, and against one of the nation's worst defenses. The story was about how great the offense was and how KD took control of some play-calling, and look at the results. Ridiculous.  Look for more of the same after today's game, because the Bruins will win … and no one will mention how average and inconsistent the Beavers are. They will praise KD for his adjustment and getting his 4-5 team back on track. Tripe.

This may even get under your skin more. From Buker in The Oregonian, look at what we've become:

You definitely get a sense here that UCLA, after four straight losses, is old news in this market. I don't think many Bruins' fans really believe their team can win tomorrow. I also get the vibe that we're covering the JV game, even though the setting - the Rose Bowl - is one of the most storied venues in college football.

So much for those who argue to keep Dorrell because we had a 10-2 season last year. No one seems to remember.

Game Notes

  • The Beavers have a little known issue affecting their locker room. Briefly, coach Riley and their AD threw one of their own players under the bus rather than defend him and risk a political correctness backlash over an incident prior their last game against Arizona State.
  • More Dorrell-speak. Coach talks about Cowen, "(he) has done a nice job of growing, to this point." Morgan Center really has to give KD a new script. PC has played awful, and padding stats against the #106 ranked pass defense after the game was already decided doesn't make him look any better, or grown.
  • In this our 25th anniversary at the Rose Bowl, we cannot embarrass our legacy with a second loss this season at home to an inferior and average team. Might be the perfect setting for revenge for UCLA throwaways QB Matt Moore and coach Mike Riley.
  • Justin Medlock is still  tied for the lead in the nation with 19 field goals made despite missing two chip shots, for him, last week. Medlock also leads the Pac-10 in points with 78.  OSU's kicker Alexis Serna has made 3 field goals greater than 50 yards. Still, KD is THE kicker's coach.
  • OSU has jumped to early leads in their 4 game wnning streak. They are 6-1 this year when leading after the 1st quarter.   In our 5 losses we have been outscored 93-30 in the second half, and 21 of those points came after the games were over.   If those 5 losses we scored only 3 points in the 3rd Qtr.
  • OSU punt returner Sammie Stroughter is the nation's 4th leading yards gainer, right behind Cal's Jackson who torched us for a highlight reel TD last week.  Sammie has 3 returns for a TD this year! Again, special teams needs to not punt to this guy!
  • OSU has 24 players from Southern California that will be on the field at the Rose Bowl today. Maybe KD will get to know them today.
